A little preparation before the crew arrives can make your fence project smoother, faster and less stressful. Use this checklist to get your yard ready.

Confirm Your Property Lines

Know exactly where your property ends. A recent survey is ideal, and if you do not have one, look for survey pins or ask a licensed surveyor. Do not assume an old fence is on the line. Building on the wrong side can lead to disputes and costly removal.

Check Permits and Rules

Find out whether your town, village or city requires a permit, and whether your HOA needs to approve the design. Review height limits and setback rules. Our fence permit guide explains what to ask.

Talk to Your Neighbors

It is courteous to let neighbors know about the project. They may have questions about where the fence will go, which side will face out and when work will happen. If a boundary fence is shared, discuss expectations in advance.

Arrange Utility Marking

Before digging, utility lines must be marked. You can request marking by contacting Call 811. Do this early because it takes a few working days. Also tell us about private lines that may not be marked, such as sprinkler lines, invisible pet fences, low-voltage lighting and drainage pipes.

Clear the Fence Line

Remove obstacles along the planned route. Trim shrubs and low branches, move planters, firewood, play equipment and furniture, and clear brush. If a tree stump or large rock is in the way, let your installer know in advance so it can be addressed.

Plan Access

Crews need a path to bring in materials and equipment. Make sure gates are unlocked and any vehicles are moved. If access is narrow, tell us during the estimate so we can plan accordingly.

Secure Pets and Children

Digging holes and open gates are hazards. Keep pets indoors or in a safe area during installation and keep children away from the work zone.

Decide on Details

Make final choices on height, style, color, gate locations and hardware before work starts. Changes mid-project can cause delays and added costs. Review our fence installation page if you need a refresher on options.

Consider the Old Fence

If you are replacing a fence, decide whether to remove it yourself or have it included. Mention shared fences with neighbors so no one is surprised.

Protect Your Landscaping

Mark plants you want to protect and discuss how we can limit damage to your lawn. Some disturbance is unavoidable but can be minimized with planning.

On Installation Day

Be available for questions, especially about gate placement, and do a final walk-through when work is done. Our fence replacement and new installation teams will review the finished fence with you.
